The time has finally come … after a long 10 years, Anberlin have released a new full-length album, and you better believe we are going to revel in it. Vega is a powerful record full of expressionism, a proud and endearing love letter to the music that brought its members back together after so many years. Each song on this record is poised and poetic, but without holding anything back.
Despite parting ways in 2014, the lockdown that ensued during the COVID pandemic prompted the group to do a series of livestream performances. What ended up being their unofficial reunion was series of shows that eventually led to a synchronous burst of inspiration and resulted in the two EPs, Silverline and Convinced. Now, in their third consecutive year of producing new releases, they seem poised to continue their hot streak.
All of Anberlin’s original members, including vocalist Stephen Christian, guitarists Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney, bassist Deon Rexroat, and drummer Nathan Young, saw this album to fruition. Matty Mullins, of Memphis May Fire, joined the band as a featured vocalist on the album and will also be standing in for Christian during future live performances as their new part-time lead vocalist. This comes after the announcement that Christian will not be touring full time with the band.
The music video for “Walk Alone” was released a a month before the album, and in it, we see the band holding auditions for a new singer. In what appears to be a visual storytelling as to how Mullins came to join the band, it is clear that he was the perfect fit for what they were looking for and was welcomed into their ensemble with open arms.
This year marks a big milestokne for Anberlin. Not only are they celebrating their first new album in a decade and introducing a new band member, but they are in the midst of their most extensive tour in over a decade. Currently on the road with Hawthorne Heights, Thursday, and Saosin, the 20 Years of Tears Tour is going on through mid September. To get tickets to a show near you, visit their official website.
